Living Buddha Falls Into Hands Of Reds Near Border of Tibet
SHANGHAI, May 15 (AP)—The Nona Hutuketu or "Living Buddha" of Sikong was reported by vernacular newspapers today to be in the
hands of communist troops. He was captured, the reports said, while trying to establish closer relations between the Sikong-Buddhist tribes and the central government. The prelate is still alive, the vernaculars added, but is a prisoner at Tsanghwa, in northern Sikong province, on the border of Tibet. Grave anxiety was expressed here for the life of the 71-year-old Hutuketu, who formerly was a member of the national legislature at
Nanking. At the same time the panchen lama, exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, remained at Kansu, awaiting a chance to return to his forbidden land.
