Mongolia—Swedish 'Duke' Named High Adviser
Kalgan, Inner Mongolia — Beset by Japanese military pene-
tration, Chinese sharpness at trade and effects of the severest winter in
a century, the peace-loving descendants of the "world-conquering" warrior Ghengis Khan have turned again for assitance to the jovial Swede who has helped them out of trouble more than once in the past.
Franz August Larsen, one-time missionary, who has spent 40 years
in Mongolia and holds the title of a Mongolian "Duke," has been named
High Adviser to the Inner Mongolia Political Council, according to the
Associated Press.
Trading Company
To this Oriental frontier land, Duke Larsen hopes to bring tanneries,
wool processing plants and other industries. He is helping the Mongolians form a trading company of their own. Days of the Hudson's
Bay Company are recalled by trading posts where furs, wool and sheepskins are exchanged for clothing, piece goods, flour.
Excess profits made by Chinese traders for centuries are to be wiped
out. Any dividends, Duke Larsen says, "will be paid into the Mongolian
Government to be used for the good of all."
