Work Jumps ahead on new shipyards ; First Keel May Be Laid by May 1; Six Ships in All.
Every possible effort is being made
to get the Grays Harbor Motorship
Corporation's shipyard just east of
the Western mill, ready for operation
at as early a date as possible. Judging from the work already accomplished the first keel at these yards
probably will be laid during the opening week of May. By July 4, it is
likely that three ships will be under
construction there.
Most of the piling for one launching way already are driven and much
decking for this way already has been
laid. As soon as a few more piling
have been driven and more decking
laid the first keel can be put-down.
A big circular band saw already is
on the ground and will be in place
for sawing out frame work for the
newships within a very short time. A
small shelter shed for some of the
machinery already has been built.
Surveyors have staked out the
ground for three launching ways, the
understanding being that these are to
be completed as soon as possible. It
is likely that three additional ways
will be built later in the summer and
if this is done six ships can be placed
under construction at one time at
these yards. Two pile drivers are on
the ground to drive the piling.
