SENATOR BORAH FOR
NATIONAL DRY LAW
Has Been "Forced to Conclusion" That Uncle Sam
Should Take a Hand.
PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 16.—At the
opening session here today for the
first annual convention .of the Anti-
Saloon league of Oregon a letter from
Senator William Borah of Idaho was
read, in which he pledged his support
to a national prohibition amendment,
in his letter Senate Borah said:
Reason fox Change.
"I have heer forced to the conclusion that the only effective way
to deal with the liquor question Is
by and through the action of the
national government. I say
forced to this conclusion.* because
on general principles I am very
much opposed to the national government taking over any work
which can be done by and through
and within the states. The liquor
interests have nationalized the
question, and experience shows
there can be no really effective
method of treating it except from
a national standpoint."
R. P. Hutton, superintendent of the
league, reported similar pledges from
United States Senators Chamberlain
and Lane and Representatives Hawley
and Sinnott of Oregon.
At the business session E. A. Baker
was elected president: the Rev. W. O.
Shank, vice president: J. J. Ross, secretary, and E. Quackenbush, treasurer
All are from Portland.
