VOISIN CANVASES
TO BE EXHIBITED
Portland Artist's Work to Be
Shown at Store
Canvases in oil by Adrien Voisin,
Portland artist, which show parts
of Spain where the revolution has
been fought and towns which have
been under bombardment since the
paintings were done, will be exhibited in the sixth-floor salon of
the Meier & Frank company beginning Monday.
Voisin visited Spain in 1930 during a two-year stay abroad and
spent considerable time painting
old landmarks and buildings of
historic significance. His selection
of subjects was, of course, with no
inkling of what was to come and
it has happened that his pictures
have become a record of places
since destroyed.
The artist left the paintings with
a friend in Spain, for he intended
to return. They were shipped out
two months ago when the custodian
returned to France for safety's
sake.
Some of the places which Voisin's
brush converted to canvas, since
made familiar as revolutionary
scenes, are Segovia, Fuente Arabia
on the seacoast, which is near Irun,
Toledo and the Tagus river, and
Granada. The subjects selected by
the artist for the most part are
the Moorish architecture which has
survived centuries of use and abuse,
most of which has been reduced to
shambles in recent months.
