ARTISTS ENJOY
BANQUET FOR 75
Mrs. Kohles Given Award
for E. S. Hennessey
Exhibit.
A painting, "In the Garden of
Gethsemane," won first place in
the appreciation of 75 persons, artists and relatives of artists, who
voted at a banquet in the Old Grill
of the Spokane hotel last night.
The picture was done by Mrs. H.
Kohles, a student of Mrs. Vandalyn
K. Goss, an artist of this city.
Second honors were accorded
Mrs. Goss, who has long had a studio here. Her subject was Indian
Mary, whom many persons of early
and later residence here knew. In
part, its appeal was the kindliness
Mrs. Goss had put into the face and
which many of those present had
seen.
Third honors were accorded William Lincoln Ganes, a tall young
colored man. His subject was "Bali
Island Girl," and was painted be-
tween two days of his work as a
freight handler. He said he had
four years of tuition in the Albright art gallery at Buffalo, N. Y.,
for which he paid with one picture.
The voters accorded fourth place
to "Peaceful Valley" by W. E.
Mitchell, made with inland woods
in natural colors, some obtained in
foreign lands. Choices were made
from 150 pictures, including pastels,
oils and water colors, exhibited
throughout November by their
sponsor, E. S. Hennessey of Hennessey & Calloway, in their place
of business, N2303 Division.
An address on the high lights of
arts was made by the Rev. Father
Bailey, teacher of languages at
Gonzaga university, who is a critic
of Flemish art and a member of
the Spokane Art association.
Mr. Hennessey reported 4000 persons inspected the exhibit. The
artists voted to exhibit at the same
place next November, entirely different pictures.
