Idaho's Laws Stopping Truck Travel. Difficulties encountered by
drivers of commercial vehicles
occasionally going across the
Idaho line are becoming so
serious that business and
friendly relations between
Washington and Idaho are
being Interfered with, Frank
W. Guilbert, manager of the
Inland Automobile association,
said today.
Drivers are inconvenienced to such
an extent that they usually have to
buy an Idaho license which carries
with it payment of personal property
tax, although a personal property tax
has been assessed in this state against
the vehicles.
"An interchange of courtesy
between the license departments of
the two states similar to that between Oregon and Washington
should be worked out," Mr. Guilbert said. "Negotiations have been
carried on from time to time and
I am still hopeful that they will
succeed.
"We have recently had many reports of what seems unfairness on
the part of Idaho officials. Vehicles
making occasional trips are stopped
and about the only thing possible to
overcome the inconvenience of being
halted is to buy an Idaho license,
which carries with it paying personal
property taxes. This is unfair and unjust as Washington vehicles have paid
taxes in this state.
Never Retaliated.
"Washington has never retaliated,
to my knowledge, against these practices, and I believe negotiations for
changes in the regulations could be
successfully carried on.
"Oregon allows vehicles to come in
for occasional trips providing no loads
are picked up in that state. Such a
regulation in Idaho would overcome
much friction and lead to better feeling between communities near the
state line."
