ALASKA CHIEF DIES OF ACCIDENT
DAWSON Y. T., July 23.—Preston J. Hilliard. United States commissioner at Eagle, Alaska, died at Eagle early today from wounds received yesterday when he was shot by Joseph B. Howard, a contractor, who, it was said, mistook him for a for he died Hilliard exonerated Howard and declared the shooting accidental.
Hilliard, who was 46, was born in Yosemite, Cal., and had lived at Eagle 21 years. In an effort to save Hilliard's life Dr. C. C. Chipman of Dawson made an all-night launch trip accompanied by two nurses, but arrived too late.
