HE'S TOO ELUSIVE
FOR DEATH'S GRIP
Alaskan Cheats Reaper Three Times and Still Is NOT Excited About It.
Cordova, Alaska, Jan. 5. (/P) -- Frank Cunningham of Cordova is in a hospital at La Touche, near here, after three narrow escapes from death within the last month. Three weeks ago terrific storms disabled his gasboat and he was shipwrecked on Montague island fordays until the tempest subsided. In a rudely constructed open boat he finally set out from the island and arrived safely in La Touche after the little craft came close to swamping several times.
Oil Explosion. At La Touche CUnningham borrowed a gasboat with which he was to take his own disabled vessel into port. While taking on oil, however, a sudden explosion enveloped the boat in flames. Cunningham's wife., who was unable to swim, jumped overboard. he dived after her and rescued her and then cut a hole in the boat to sink it and save the oil dock from destruction by fire.
In the fire Cunningham's arms, face and hands were badly buned. He is expected to recover.
From the La Touche hospital he sent a New Year's cable greetings to Cordova friends, but did not mention any of his exciting experiences of the last month.
