COMMUNISM IN
UNIONS RAPPED
Speakers Declare Farmers Must Take Hold to Save Country.
Labor unions in the United States are dominated by communists who are “using strikes as a dress rehearsal” for the overthrow of the government, Holmes Bishop, Orange, Cal., president of the Associated Farmers of California, charged Friday night in an address before the Citizens’ Protective association. Approximately 750 persons attended the meeting in the Civic building.
“When curtain times comes they will try to change our government to a second Russia,” Bishop said.
CARSON SPEAKS
Mayor Joseph K. Carson of Portland and Lester P. Edge, president of the Citizens’ Protective association, shared the speakers’ platform.
Sanity in government will never be restored in the United States until the farmers and women of the nation take hold, Carson said. The mayor called farmers individualists who plow to the heart of a problem. Carson said it is woman’s instinct to correct what is ailing.
Bishop told of efforts made by California farmers to combat labor trouble and “communist activities.” Bishop said the organization of farmers and teaching them to boycott cities dominated by unionism had proven strong weapons in securing farm demands.
URGES SUPPORT
He urged Washington citizens to support and initiative measure designed to end labor troubles on farms in the state.
Mayor Carson scored new deal spending practices, saying the country can’t buy its way back to prosperity.
Carson also attacked the national labor relations board and the Wagner labor act. He said the labor board was powerless in jurisdictional dispute in Portland lumber mills.
Reviewing Portland’s battle to rid the city of labor racketeers, the mayor said “There are already 125 arrests as a result of these activities and 190 indictments are out. But we’re not through yet. The people of Portland are behind us and we won’t give up the fight until the last goon is driven from Potland.”
