20 x 15 cm . black and white photographic print . View of the unveiling of the Pioneer Square Totem Pole , looking southwest . This crowd waits for the dedication of the totem pole in Pioneer Square . The pole was taken from a Tlingit village in Alaska in 1899 . After being damaged by fire in 1938 , a duplicate pole replaced this landmark . In this photo , the pole is surrounded by stands for a fireworks display , and is in front of the Northern Pacific Railroad ticket office . The photo comes from an album given to Homer Hill by Seattle City Engineer R.H . [Reginald Heber] Thomson ; most album images depict the installation of a water supply system for Seattle .
