Title
A Family of Bathers , Dressed for a Portrait in Their Swimsuits , ca. 1912
Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
Two women and three girls pose in their bathing suits for a portrait at Matsura's studio . A man , perhaps the father and husband of the family , peaks his head out of a curtain hanging on the right . The grown women wear sailor collared suits that gather into knickers at the knee . Long sleeves cover their arms and black stockings show no part of their leg . Even their hair is bundled inside a makeshift swim cap--a scarf tied around their neck and knotted snuggly at either sides of the front skull . The young girls wear short dresses to the knee , one even lacks sleeves . They do not wear stockings or caps .
