Title
Embankment , Side Gates and Flume Leading to Conconully Reservoir , ca. 1907
Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
A portion of the embankment of rock-fill for the Conconully Dam , looking west . The wooden chutes are side gates of the flume . Workers opened and closed the gates all along the length of the flume , depending on where rock-fill needed to be dumped next . A flume , visible on the surface of the lower part of the embankment , flushed out water (which had seeped through settled rock-fill) back out into the reservoir . The Dam was the first project by the United States Reclamation Service within Washington State , and also the first to use the hydraulic fill method .
