Description |
A group of school children and their teacher pose for a portrait outside the Okanogan School. The teacher, in the back on the right, is Mrs. Nora Snider Freeman. She was born in Illinois, lived in Iowa and Nebraska before coming to Okanogan in 1910. She was trained as a teacher in the Omaha, Nebraska schools and became a teacher right after high school in the 1890s. She taught in Omaha until she was married to Jotham M. Freeman. When he died a few years later she went to New England and taught for several years before coming to Washington state. In 1913 she married Cyrus J. Hinshaw and they lived at Tonasket. She continued to teach school in the Tonasket-Oroville area for several years. After being absent from the Okanogan area for many years, she returned to Okanogan in 1933 and lived there until her death in 1969. Some of the children have been identified. Fourth from the left back row is Maude Hellyer (Skelton). Sixth in that same row is Marie Schaller (who later married Mr. Herb Conner). Fourth in from the left in the middle row is Blanche Irwin. The ninth person in that row is Nina Allender, who later married Mr. Fred Baines. In the front row on the far left is Hank Pein, the second youngest son of Mr. Chris Pein, the town butcher. Third in from the left is John Shull.
