Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
Matsura and friend W.R . Kahlow stand together for a full-length portrait at Matsura's studio . In his logger outfit and full beard , one might not recognize Mr . Kahlow as one of Okanogan's leading citizens . Originally from Minnesota , Mr . Kahlow was a teamster , and fought at the Birch Coulee Indian Battle in 1862 . In 1904 he erected the Alma Hotel in Alma , a small town incorporated into what became Okanogan in 1907 . By 1908 he had purchased Okanogan's Pioneer Stables and Livery from proprietor L.S . Erley . A known socialist , perhaps it was Kahlow who invited Matsura to speak at a socialist meeting at the Cherokee Strip schoolhouse in October , 1908 . Matsura lectured on the social conditions in Japan .
