Description
An image of farmland under development near Okanogan , Washington . The expanse might be the seven hundred acre experimental orchard owned by the Boston and Washington Company and run by William Mears out of Boston , Massachusetts . The land , located at Tarheel Flat , lay above the townsite of Malott . Purchased in 1910 , "Boston Heights ", as it was now called , was to be the epitome of modern orchard practices . All of the acreage was to be supervised by top horticulturists , and contain the best selling verities of the day--Spitzenberg , Delicious , Rome Beauty , Stayman Winesap , Winesap , and Jonathan apples . The land was platted by civil engineers Fred Paine and Bill Muldrow of Okanogan ; the water was supplied by the Pleasant Valley Irrigation and Power Company .
