Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
Constructed in 1909 , the Schaller Block , a three story , brick building which took up the northeast corner of Second Avenue and Pine Street , was touted in the local newspaper as an example of the amount of gumption displayed in the "Town that Does Things ". Locals also called it a skyscraper . Mr . Clem Schaller's original intent for the building was as a cement brick making plant . The 40 x 60 structure soon metamorphosed , however , into an office complex and social hall . Commercial Bank , one of the earliest banks in Okanogan , held offices here--including a 20 x 40 vault with tiered and plate glass windows and tile floor . John C . Schaller's bakery was in the opposite ground floor corner , and just above was the legal office of Charles A. Johnson , a lawyer from Seattle . The building also had an indoor heating system , installed by hardware store owner , Leonard Bragg . Two furnaces located in the basement , and tin pipes running throughout the building , provided heat for all rooms .
