Description
Horse racing formed a large part of the festive occasions in Okanogan , and was a crowd favorite during the Fourth of July . The lack of patriotic decoration in this scene suggests that the race may have taken place during a holiday known as "Fiesta Day ". Beginning May 21 , 1910 , townspeople set the day aside for a relaxing community afternoon of baseball , horse racing and music . The race course on Second Avenue was the scene for many different types of racing , including the free-for-all race , a 300 yard race , the turnstake race , and even a bucking contest . Native Americans living in the South Half of the Colville Indian Reservation often attended Fiesta Day , and were usually favored to win .
