Description
Plans began in 1908 for a standard gauge electric railroad to extend from Nighthawk (north toward Canada) into Brewster , by way of Okanogan . President and General Manager of the Okanogan Electric Railroad Company , A.M . Dewey , also held part ownership of Que Ess Mine . The railroad would run down the Similkameen River past the Que Ess on to Fish Lake , through the center of the Irrigation Project farmland and Okanogan . However , right-of-way delays and difficulties in finding backers for the projected $30,000 per mile track put an end to the OER . By March 1912 , the Okanogan Independent , the local newspaper , could report only that "The road , now for a long time known as the 'The Hot Air Line ' was to connect the entire county...but only went as far as paper. " In this picture , taken in September 1909 , George Major and his crew of OER surveyors camp near Okanogan . At this time Dewey was deciding on the best route for a spur line into Conconully .
