Title
Miners in a Mine Shaft at the Q & S , ca. 1909
Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
By the time this photo was taken , many of the great mines of the 1870s were being shut down throughout the country , not because the supply had run dry , but due to the demonetization of silver and the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1893 . Of the few large stake mines that lingered , the Q & S Mine was among them. The Q & S Mine , located about ten miles north of Conconully , was co-owned until 1911 by Colonel A.M . Dewey , the same man that failed to develop the Okanogan Electric Railway--a scheme for a railroad that would travel from Nighthawk in Canada , past stops at other mines such as the Q & S , and down to Brewster . The coming of a railroad , many felt , would revitalize the silver trade and make it a profitable venture in Eastern Washington once again .
