Title
Construction of Sluicing Flumes for the Conconully Dam , ca. 1907
Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
Two flumes ran lengthwise of the dam near Conconully . The main dirt flume seen in this photograph , which brought rock-fill from a nearby mountain or "borrow-pit ", was two feet , nine inches wide and lined with No.10 gauge steel plate . A flume had to be lined with steel to withstand the beating it took from the rocks it carried to the site , as well as the pressure and wear of the water . Rocks sluiced from the borrow pits made up most of the material used to construct the dam embankments . The flume in this photograph rests on a series of trestles . A large engine is being used to hoist a section of the flume onto the trestle .
