Title
Scenic Overlook of the Conconully Dam and Surrounding Area , ca. 1907
Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
Matsura was hired by the United States Reclamation Service to photograph the construction progress of Conconully Dam . This image shows the dam to the right , the flume on top of a trestle system , and the hills above . Left of center is a large puff of smoke . This might indicate that the picture is of an immense blast , which occurred at the site in August of 1907 , for the formation of the spillway , 180 feet long and excavated on the west side of the dam through granite and limestone rock . A spillway was a safety measure necessary to carry excess flood-water around the dam . Matsura purchased a special lens for the shot , allowing him to take it from a distance of one mile away .
