Title
Core and Embankments of Conconully Dam , ca.1908
Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
A bird's-eye-view of the Conconully Dam shows the early stages of the formation of the Dam's core . The core was filled with silt and fine sand , and some rock-fill , making it quite watertight . The core is what is known as the "impermeable membrane " the watertight portion that stops water from leaking out and weakening or breaking the dam . Therefore a strong , watertight core was necessary for the dam to work . The strip in the center of the photograph holds the core material , while flumes flank it on either side , dumping rock-fill for the embankment slopes . Two workers can be seen shoveling material .
