Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
A farmer holds a stalk from his planting of corn . The rows lie in between his orchard rows of apples . A common practice at that time was to plant peach trees in between apple rows as an insurance crop while waiting for apple trees to bud in a customary six year time span . It only took a peach tree three years before it began to produce fruit . Other vegetables or fruits were sometimes planted in between the rows as well , either for family consumption , or as a marketable crop .
