Description
With perfectly aligned rows and trees all of the same height , Ambrose Murray's orchard near Malott received the highest praise among horticulturists . Planted the spring before , Murray's was also the first known orchard to lose less than one percent of the crop the first year . The average loss ran between one and five percent . Murray lost only four peach trees . He planted mostly Delicious variety apples , but some Winesap , Jonathan and Winter Bananas as well . In between the rows he planted Elberta peaches , since they would be providing a crop in the next couple of years , while apples could take anywhere from six to ten years .
