Description
A flume , carrying water from the canals of the U.S . Reclamation Service's Irrigation Project , is seen in this picture of a young orchard . Vegetables of some variety are seen growing in between the rows of young apple trees . Many farmers planted this manner in the hopes that "filler " crops could produce enough income to cover the cost of the orchard until it began to produce fruit . For apples that could take up to six to ten years .

Original photographic prints were scanned as 300 dpi TIFF files on a Microtek 9600XL scanner. 72 dpi JPEG files were then added to the CONTENT database at the WSU Libraries.
