Photographer
Matsura , Frank , 1873-1913 .
Description
Two borrow pits , located some 2000 feet away above the Conconully Dam Site , held the cache of material used in forming the dam's embankment . Using the hydraulic pressure of water , workers would "sluice " the pit's walls , breaking up rocks and channeling them through flumes to the dam site . Workers used a monitor or "giant--a large nozzle attached to a standard with a ball and socket joint for mobility--to shoot pressurized water toward the pit wall under excavation . In this picture , the giant is in the lower right hand corner . It is attached to the pipe that carries water from the west fork of the Salmon River . A man stands near a large boulder in the center of the photograph .
