Description
The photograph is of the Conconully Dam Spillway . Two explosions in August 1908 , one of two tons of powder , the other of three and one half tons , cut the spillway from a spur protruding out from the Peacock Mountain abutment on the west side of the dam . Its purpose was to safeguard the dam from erosion should the river flood . One hundred and eighty feet long , the sides and bottom of the spillway were lined with concrete . This open cut channel diverted the water around the dam .
