A sheathed knife is strapped to his waist . headdress and fringed shirt . Beadwork runs the length of his sleeves . He is holding a peace pipe whose handle is allegedly composed of catalyte . On verso of photograph : "Chief Joseph , Nez Perce , From an old photograph in the collection of Joseph Sherburne made during the exile in Indian Territory. "

Digitization
Original photographic prints were scanned at 24 bit color, with 3000 pixels by the long side, for master TIFF files on an Epson Expression 10,000 XL scanner. Prints were then scanned at 24 bit, with 600 pixels by the long side, as jpeg files. These JPEGs were then added to the CONTENTdm database at WSU Libraries.
