Description
Studio portrait of wetyétmes wahayqt (John Minthorn) wearing a long plaid tunic over his c’apkiláakt (breech cloth) and xe’xépil (leggings) . His Nez Perce name was wetyétmes wahayqt (Swan Necklace) . A piece of paper accompanying this image stated that "He (Swan Necklace) joined two companions , Sarpsis Ilpilp and Wahlitits , in the first killing of white men which precipitated the Nez Perce War . His identity was never revealed by his fellow warriors , and he lived on the Nez Perce Reservation for years under the name of John Minthorn . He died on the reservation in the late twenties. " This photograph was likely taken between 1880 and 1930 .

Digitization
Original photographic prints were scanned at 24 bit color, with 3000 pixels by the long side, for master TIFF files on an Epson Expression 10,000 XL scanner. Prints were then scanned at 24 bit, with 600 pixels by the long side, as jpeg files. These JPEGs were then added to the CONTENTdm database at WSU Libraries.
