Profile of Mourning Dove who is one of the first Native American women authors . She is wearing traditional Native American attire and several pieces of jewelry . She is sitting on a bench covered with a dark cloth . Mourning Dove , also known as Christine Quintasket , Hum-ishu-ma , and other names , is well-known for her novel , "Cogewea the Half-Blood : A Depiction of the Great Montana Cattle Range " which depicts the story of Cogewea , a mixed-raced woman who ranches on the Flathead Reservation . This novel is one of the first literary works published by a Native American woman . She was born circa 1888 , and died on August 8 , 1936 .

Digitization
Original photographic prints were scanned at 24 bit color, with 3000 pixels by the long side, for master TIFF files on an Epson Expression 10,000 XL scanner. Prints were then scanned at 24 bit, with 600 pixels by the long side, as jpeg files. These JPEGs were then added to the CONTENTdm database at WSU Libraries.
