Description
The battle of lamáta (White Bird Canyon) occurred following several Salmon River raids that alerted General Howard , who then dispatched Capt . Perry with ninety-nine men , mounts , camping equipment , and three days rations . Capt . Perry's orders were to guard the towns of Cottonwood and sáyxsaykiin (Grangeville , Idaho) , however he received information about the Nez Perce camped at lamáta (White Bird) and decided to pursue the tribe . Cemetery Butte , lamáta (White Bird Battlefield) . Northernmost of the two cemetery buttes . From the two Cemetery Buttes an excellent view of the lamáta (White Bird battlefield) is to be had.

Original photographic prints were scanned at 24 bit color, with 3000 pixels by the long side, for master TIFF files on an Epson Expression 10,000 XL scanner. Prints were then scanned at 24 bit, with 600 pixels by the long side, as jpeg files. These JPEGs were then added to the CONTENTdm database at WSU Libraries.
