Description
This battle was the defining engagement of a short war between the U.S . and the Sioux sparked by disputes over violations of the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1851) . 600 U.S . soldiers engaged 250 Sioux , which resulted in 86 war casualties . Consequently , General William Harney negotiated a peace treaty to stop further bloodshed , which took effect by the beginning of October 1855 .
