Description |
1 photographic print; 3 x 4 inches. Squirt was one of the earliest, if not the first, Washington State College athletic mascots, coming to the school in 1904. Squirt had the distinct honor of being a co-mascot for a time- on a football trip to the state of Oregon on October 16th-24th, 1905, Squirt was temporarily stolen by fans of Oregon State University (then Oregon Agricultural College). Though Squirt was recovered in time for the trip home, the Washington State football team had stolen a small brown bear named Toodles in response, and Toodles and Squirt subsequently served as co-mascots for a period. Squirt's death is reported in the Jan. 17, 1911 Evergreen. After his owner graduated, Squirt had lived the remainder of his life on the Spalding Ranch in Almota, WA, and was eventually buried there. That gravesite likely went under water with the construction of the Little Goose Dam. |
