Description
1 photographic print ; 12 x 10 cm . On November 11 , 1927 Washington governor Roland Hartley gifted a live cougar to WSC . Student loyalists proposed naming it Hartley after the governor , but fearing he’d lose the votes of UW fans , Hartley instead suggested naming it after 5’2 ' Cougar quarterback Herbert 'Butch ' Meeker , and the live cougar mascot became ‘Butch.’ Butch I died of old age in January , 1938
