Description
The Corinth canal connects the Saronic Gulf to the Gulf of Corinth . At the start of the 6th century BC , the Greeks began constructing the Diolkos , a slipway designed to drag their boats , placed on wooden cylinders , from one gulf to the other . To expedite the process and ease the labor involved in dragging a ship across the isthmus , the ship's goods were unloaded and sent by a different road to the port and were then reloaded once the ship returned to the water . Eventually , Roman Emperor Nero started plans to replace the difficult roadway with a canal , but after his death , the canal's construction ended until the 19th century . The canal is now 6,343 meters long .
