Description
Here is a view of the Erchtheion on top of the Acropolis , Athens , Greece . Here Poseidon struck the ground with his trident , and Athena produced an olive tree . The temple is named after Erichthonius , a mythical king of Athens . This photograph shows another view of the temple . Note on the left side the Caryatids , six larger than life maidens who support the southern portico of the temple . Today , these are plaster of paris ; Lord Elgin in the 19th century carried off the real statues .
