Description
1 bird's-eye view print ; engraving , 19 x 27 cm . Book 3 , page 70 . Tenochtitlan was conquered by Hernan Cortes and his Spanish forces in 1521 . The city had incurred massive amounts of damage in the battle , and afterwards Cortes ordered the destruction of the remaining Aztec buildings and rebuilt the city as Mexico City , the capital of his Mexican holdings . Given the lack of the traditional Aztec pyramidal temples in this image , it can be assumed to portray the city after Cortes ' rebuilding efforts .
