Description
The plates 75 - 80 that Chavero depicted refer to the 1524 expedition of Alvarado to Guatemala . Alvarado left Mexico City in mid-December 1523 after aiding Cortes in the Panuco expedition , and traveled via Oaxaca and the Soconusco area to the Maya areas in Guatemala , to which campaign these plates refer . Thus , temporally , these final plates are out of order since they refer to an earlier campaign . Perhaps the simplest explanation is that the scribe(s) who prepared the original lienzo had depicted the conquest of Mexico , the Metztitlan and Panuco expeditions , and then the expeditions of Guzman , which fall in correct chronological order . However , since the document was prepared to support Tlaxcalan claims for rewards in assisting the Spaniards , then as a sort of addendum the campaign under Alvarado was added , though not in its proper chronological order , which was the normal indigenous pattern . Thus , plates 76 - 87 , which concern 1524 , should come just before plates 52-75 , which pertain to 1530-31 . Plate 76 . Which concerns the battle of Tzapotitlan , land of the zapotes ( a middle American food plant) , on 17 February 1524 . This town is called locally Xetulul and this was the first major battle of the expedition under Pedro de Alvarado , called Tonatiuh , which was to subjugate the various Maya strongholds in Guatemala . Note that the indigenous warriors are depicted with Spanish weapons in this plate . 28 x 33 cm . color lithograph oriented sideways on 50 x 38 cm . page . Denaro Lopez litografio .
