Description
Court ladies lived in semidarkness , secluded behind screens like these, so that even their husbands (and lovers) often did not have a very clear idea of what they looked like . If they were out of sight , they were not out of mind , however . They exchanged letters constantly with other courtiers , male and female , attended concerts and parties (behind screens) and often took lovers (or so their writings suggest) . This is a very unusual culture in sequestering women while fostering a flourishing subculture of illicit romance . Exhibition the costume museum , Kyoto , with miniature Heian-era palace and figurines .
