Description
In 312 BC , Appius Claudius Caecus began construction on the Via Appia Antica , a road that eventually stretched from Rome to Brindisi , located on the coast of Apulia . The first 90 kilometers of the road , from Rome to Terracina , were nearly straight . Numerous catacombs border the road outside of Rome .
